The subject is the characteristic rimrock above the town of Savoy in Spearfish Canyon.  I was participating in the Great Black Hills Paint Out in Spearfish Canyon on September 19, 2010, and I noticed the morning light advancing over the canyon rim and striking the aspens down the canyon slope.  My wife, Penny, and I stayed at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge in Savoy, and this view exists just outside the north entry. 

My goal for this painting was to depict this beautiful canyon rim on an autumn morning.
