I had been photographing the bison herd for an hour, and I wasn't yet convinced that I had captured subject material fitting for a painting.  The buffalo herd was moving away from me, and this cow and calf were at the front.  I was watching them to see where they were headed, and the young bison struck a brief pose of looking back that struck a chord. 

My goal for this painting was to capture the nature of a young bison.
